APB out of Aberdeen, Scotland is one of my all time favorite 80s alternative bands, although they are fairly obscure. They are best known for their song "Shoot You Down" off their "Something To Believe In" album, and although they never put out much material (two albums, one EP), I like just about every track they made. Here is a live sample of APB, although I think their recorded work is what really shines:

A Little APB History:

During the'80s, one of the most popular underground alternative bands
to make a splash in the New York Tri-State area was, surprisingly, not
a local band. In fact, APB hailed from across the pond in
Scotland. While most alternative bands of the'80s used chiming guitars
and/or icy synths to get their points across, APB were an anomaly, as it was funk bass that led the charge (quite comparable to Gang of Four -- minus the political lyrics).
In fact, their early work served as a blueprint for what the Red Hot Chili Peppers would follow on their first few releases. Formed in Aberdeen, Scotland, APB were comprised of singer/bassist Iain Slater , guitarist Glenn Roberts , and drummer George Cheyne , with a pair of percussionists added over the years ( Nick Jones from 1982-1983 and Mikey Craighead taking Jones 'spot from 1984-1989).

The group initially caused a buzz in Europe, which lead to several sessions for BBC Radio 1 between 1981 and 1984 (the John Peel Sessiontwice, and the David Jensen Sessionand Peter Powell Sessiononce apiece).
Several singles were issued as well, which served as the basis for APB 's debut full-length, Something to Believe In
, in 1985. New York radio soon embraced these singles (namely"Palace
Filled with Love,""Rainy Day,""One Day,""What Kind of Girl?,"and
especially the infectious"Shoot You Down"), which led to several U. S.
tours -- including spots over the years opening for both the Clash and James Brown . Additionally, APB headlined their own New York gigs (including a performance at the famous venue the Ritz).

In 1986 a sophomore effort, Cure for the Blues , was released, as well as a four-song EP, Missing You Already
, later that same year. The group would continue to perform
sporadically for the remainder of the'80s, but would not issue any more
new recordings. Interest in APB increased by the early 21st century,
thanks to the emergence of countless new wave revival acts, which led
to a double-disc reissue of their debut in 2005, Something to Believe
In: 20th Anniversary Edition , as well as a compilation of their early
radio sessions, The Radio 1 Sessions , a year later.

Although I try to keep Firefox from becoming bloated by too many extensions, I do have a cadre of them I just can't do without. I do go through them periodically to see if I can weed out and uninstall any of those that I do not use regularly. About 5 of them made that cut tonight, but I also replaced one of the five with a new extension called "Mobilizer" (since I'm now in love with my Moto Q and have completely tricked it out) which with a right click will select, convert to the proper format and send the object to the mobile phone of your choice. I have yet to test drive it, but will review it after I have. In theory, it's brilliant. Let's hope it lives up to expectations.

A few other extensions I find invaluable:

Download Status Bar - I am a downloading maniac and this extension has streamlined that process. I can watch the progress of my downloads in the lower status bar, with speed of download, name, and pause, resume, etc. without taking up much real estate. I can click on them when done and launch installation, view it or what have you and I can easily clear them one at a time or all at once. Tried and true, this is a MUST if you are an obsessive down loader like myself.

The next two work hand in hand. I like to maximize my browser viewing area (don't we all?) and so Smart Bookmarks Bar & Favicon Picker have been a boon to saving space, improving the functionality of my links bar and my overall browsing experience. Smart Bookmarks Bar will allow you to make all your bookmarks into favicons. Instead of say, having only 10 or 1 so links in your links bar and then having to use the drop down or wade through your bookmarks, I now have 45 (yes, FORTY FIVE) of my favorites in my links bar, all denoted by favicons, and it takes two seconds to visually locate and open my favorites. If you forget what an icon links to, hovering over gives you a text reminder.

TIP: If your favorite site doesn't have a favicon, or it won't load, here is where Favicon Picker comes in. That extension lets you go to a bookmark's properties and chose a favicon or icon for it. You can use one of your own, or I just "Google" the sight, and if it does have a favicon, I save the favicon that didn't load in my icon folder, renaming it to match the sight. For the most part, you can just drag and drop and the favicon loads, but for the rare instance it doesn't, you're trying to save real estate and easily identify your bookmark, so it's a good "fix".)

FastVideo Download - from a tiny icon in your lower status bar, quickly and easily download any embedded video, from YouTube or pretty much anywhere, in a flash. Sweet!

starring Glenn
Close, Rose Byrne and Ted Danson? If you like must see TV, this qualifies This
show had me hooked from the teasers, and it's been riveting, compelling, mind
bending TV from the opening minutes to the closing minutes through two episodes
so far. My gut feeling is this show is going to be my second favorite show
after Heroes (or maybe on par) if the next few episodes can maintain the
intensity and pace.

I'm so glad to see non-premium cable networks, like FX courting big screen stars and
bringing them to the small screen with productions that seem on par with The
Soprano's, Sex in The City and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Glenn Close was stellar in her one year role on The Shield with Michael Chickless, now she's got her own show to headline, and it's high caliber. No doubt
the reason Damages has the has the feel of "the real deal" as the first two episodes were
written by the Kessler's and Zelman of Soprano's fame.

The story opens with
a bloody Ellen (Rose Byrne) running through the streets of Manhattan and then
sent to an interrogation room, but we have no idea why. The story unfolds
dramatically from there, giving us glimpses of the world of high powered, amoral, win at any cost, take no prisoner's Patty Hewes one Gotham’s top legal eagles and the equally repulsive
people in a case she is prosecuting for damages, currently that would be one
Arthur Frobisher and his minions, played by Ted Danson. As the story unfolds in flashback, Patty
is on a quest to destroy Frobisher, a World Comm type exec who lead his workers
and stockholders to ruin, while he continued to line his pockets and portfolio. That's where aspiring attorney Ellen comes in. Wanted by several law firms, through a series of twisted events, she ends up with a prestigious position working for Patty Hewes. This all becomes master manipulation, unbeknownst to Ellen, as Patty needs her in her employ to get to her soon to be sister in law who has
information that could make the case for Patty and damage Frobisher permanently. All the manipulation and back ally meetings only leads up to the chilling discovery of murdered animals and people, with no answers, as a bloody and shocked Ellen sits and waits for counsel in that police interrogation room.

This is one clever ride. It appears it will be Dickensonian
in the fact that intricate and different story lines will be used and woven in
and out over time lending drama, suspense and mystery and will with any luck
finish in a grand macabre tapestry. This is on my must see (or definitely MUST
DVR) list from here on out. I would love to hear from anyone else who has
caught the show so far and if your feelings concur with or oppose mine. Anyway, it’s
nice to see non-premium cable channels put out work that at this point seems to
rival those found on pay cable, but also could do just as well on the big
screen attracting stars from that venue as well. Well done FX. I’m hooked - finally a dark Gotham tale I can get into!

Another Damages Review - "Hide Your Bunnies"!

I needed a quick summer read. Just something light and humorous that would kick off summer at the beach or the pool. I went into my local library and they were hosting a book discussion and pot luck dinner for this book on July 27th, so I decided I'd read the book whether I attend or not (jury's still out, but leaning towards showing up). The book was not available, so I bought it at Target.

I loved the way the book was written, it was just the lightening fast summer read I was looking for. On the surface, the book reads superficial and funny. If one really looks, there are a lot of deeper truths here.

For better or worse, I live in a neighborhood where having a nanny (even if it's part time) is pretty much standard issue (I don't have one, never have, never will as I am neither that affluent nor do I care to have someone else parent my children, but don't "judge" everyone who does, as some people legitimately need the help and are not completely "hands off"). Although none of my neighbors rival the wealth, "status" or snoot factor of Mrs. X, many certainly have parents that have "arrived" and they are on their way "up" the ladder too. I've seen the Mrs. X mentality first hand. I've seen children call their mom's the names of their nannies, or mom's being so out of sorts they can't function to care for their own children if nanny takes a day/time off. I've seen mom's brush off their kids with the "spatula" move and refer their emotionally needy kids to the nanny for care as mom is too busy being a show piece, uber career woman or too wrapped up in her own drama to be there for her child.

Despite being an easy piece of humor, this is also social commentary beneath the surface. Look a bit deeper and you'll see the book is an indictment of the truly rich and shameless who have made a cult of this style of child rearing. Fleshed out is their sense of entitlement (the air they breathe is definitely better than yours), the demeaning way they treat those around them they don't consider equals, the falseness of the lifestyle, the pretense, how child rearing is more about programming than hands on nurturing, that marriages are more about what you have, appearance and status, rather than a relationship.

Again, not because I sought it out or subscribe to it (quite the opposite), but by default, I have some of these pedigree folks living around me, and I've seen it all first hand, and I just can't help shake my head. This book put all my thoughts into words, even though I've never been a nanny, but have observed what nannies working for these folks endure. My kids have, for the first time in their lives, no one to play with this summer in our new neighborhood (camp "mom" is in session and part of the reason I've been noticeably absent on line), as kids are sent to $5 to 10K per child (and most people here have more than one child) summer camps from 8am - 6pm, even if mom has a nanny, a housekeeper and doesn't work. If they aren't quite that affluent, there is the town summer camp where the rest of the kids are warehoused. (I am not against summer camp, but there is a difference between giving your kids a camping experience and something to do and getting rid of them so you can shop, lunch and go to the spa, without a hassle.) People complain about the behavior of kids in the ''hood", but I have seen pretty awful behavior (drugs, vandalism, recklessness, crime) coming from the over privileged set too, it just gets swept under the rug better, even if it's less prevalent then in impoverished communities. Whenever you take the "parent" out of "parenting" the result is the same, even if the trappings are different. Unfortunately, the truths in this book hit all too close to home. It was still a fun read, but it is a truthful insight into life in upscale locations around the country and shouldn't be written off as exaggeration for the sake of humor. None the less, a fun read and recommended book.

Bob Dylan will be playing at Bethel Woods Performing Arts Center June 30th, 2007. Bethel Woods is located on the "real" and original Woodstock/Yasgur's Farm Site, which was in Bethel, not in the actual town [and artsy "nouveau hippy" and NYC tourist haven] of Woodstock, NY, a common mistake made by people not from this area or of the era.

I saw Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young there last August on their Freedom of Speech tour, which was fabulous and having Neil Young there really was a major treat, as he doesn't join them very often. I didn't wear my tie dye or my Birki's that evening (I like to do the unexpected) and I think I was in the only group that wasn't so attired!

It was the first summer the venue opened and I think it was the third or fourth performance of their maiden season. I have to say that Bethel Woods is one of the most scenic, well thought out, naturalized, architecturally and acoustically beautiful venues, period. That's saying a lot, as I've seen scores of shows all over the U.S. and abroad. The architects who worked on the project were Westlake Reed Leskosky who built the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland, the Denver Arts Center and Playhouse Square in Cleveland. Landscaping the lush and expansive site were the Olin Partnership who designed the grounds at the Getty Center in LA, Bryant Park in NYC and the Los Angeles County Museum. The acoustics were done by Mark Holden of Jaffe Holden Acoustics, which has also produced the acoustics for the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the new concert space in Carnegie Hall, Zankel Hall, and the renovation of the New York Philharmonic's home, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center. Not too shabby, yet a far cry from the venue's roots. This year the BW site is advertising they are upgrading the food service, but I have to say the food, snacks and beer were pretty outstanding last year. The majority of my experience there was organized, easy to navigate and pleasurable. Even the bathroom lines, although typically long, were not overly obnoxious. The kettle corn was amazing and the smell of patchouli (not weed, unbelievably) and kettle corn permeated the venue.

I opted for lawn seats with my party and got there a half hour before the gates opened, about two hours before the show, since I only live about an hour and 20 minutes away if traffic is reasonable. Since the concert was on a Sunday evening, I knew I'd be heading up at a low traffic time. That's an iffy proposition for a a show on a Friday or even Saturday night, as the corridor up to Sullivan County, which marks the departure line from extended metro NYC region, is called the "Jewish Alps", a dangerous and rather narrow highway that winds through rural territory that becomes congested with traffic (complete with overloaded, beat up vehicles with people who drive worse than lunatics) due to the abundance of Hasidic camps and resorts that swell to beyond capacity in the summer. Sullivan County can be summed up in 3 words: Hippies, hillbillies and Hasidim. That's some mix, eh? Despite that, I didn't take any back routes, just the standard advertised driving directions and didn't experience any extraordinary traffic issues even though the show was sold out. Bethel Woods can reportedly handle nearly 20,000 guests between the Pavillion seating and lawn.

Arrival parking went like butter and having snagged lawn seats that were just above where assigned seating ended let us enjoy the spectacular night and allowed more freedom of movement, so we didn't regret the decision from a visual, musical or financial standpoint. The only complaint I had was the three hour wait we had getting OUT of the parking lot. We were some of the first people parked and we bolted out, but to no avail, we may as well have hung out. We literally couldn't and didn't move further than out of our spot and into the actual parking row in that whole time. It was one of the worst traffic jams I have ever been in. Despite that rather daunting issue, I wouldn't hesitate to see a show there again, but I'd have to really be dying to see the performance rather than just going for something fun to do, until I hear they have worked out that rather major "kink".

To wrap, I hope they end up attracting some current talent there. It's definitely a 60s and 70s lineup so far. Arlo Guthrie, Ritchie Havens and Country Joe Mc Donald as well as [yuck] Chicago with Peter Cetera are rumored to be lined up for July. Last year, opening well into the summer, The Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows and Ashlee Simpson were the only performers of this generation. Frankly, although to some it might seem counter intuitive, I'd love to see a real alt.rock or head banging line up there myself. Something like the Lollapalooza's of old (even current) or the K-ROCK Dysfunctional Family Picnic line ups of more recent years would suite me fine. LOL I happen to love classical music, but until they get the exit traffic issue handled, I think I'll pass. For those in it for the long haul or wanting to make a weekend of it, here are some suggestions for places to eat and stay and for navigating beautiful Sullivan county [insert dueling banjos] for the uninitiated.

DRIVING TIPS and FROM LOCAL POLICEMAN "RADAR RAY" (or how to avoid traffic along the main route to Bethel Woods and get there with less stress and hassle, especially on a Friday or Saturday coming from the NYC metro area):

Stay away from 17B as much as possible to avoid traffic. If you're in Orange County try 97 to 55, then a left on Duggan Dr. If you're in the Liberty area, take 52 to Fosterdale and come in from the west; where there's less traffic. From Pennsylvania, get on 97 to 52 or to County Route 114 to 17B.

If you're in Monticello or at Exit 104, you can bypass 17B by going toward 17B west, but instead of taking it, you get on old Route 17 and go to the stop sign for Catskill Regional Medical Center. Turn left on Lieutenant Brender Highway (Route 73), go to Fraser Road, turn right. Go to the end of the road, turn left. Follow that to Route 55 to Kauneonga Lake. Bear right on 141 to Layman Rd. Go to Perry. Turn left to Jaketown. Go to Burr, make a right to 17B. Hurd is just two roads away to the east.

You can stop and eat at the Fat Lady, Buster's, the Front Porch and the Lighthouse. Blanche's will be closed (after 3 p.m.). You could try Friends in Smallwood (just off 17B, 583-1050). It's a little out of the way and good. You get a filet mignon and lobster tail for about $25.

Don't speed through the zones, you'll get nailed - the limit drops from 55 to 40 in White Lake.

Have you ever been driving, remembered something you wanted to write
down or remember for later? You don't have a pen and paper handy, or you can't pull over to make a note, or worse, you try to multi task while driving? Problem solved with free Jott service. Call the toll free Jott number, it beeps, you leave a message.

Jott then simply and elegantly goes to work for you. You're audio voice memo is sent off and gets transcribed and send it back to you as an
email with both the original audio as well as the text of what you said
into the phone. Jott doesn't stop there. You can import your contacts from Gmail, Outlook/OE and other sources and Jott voice notes to friends and colleagues. How cool is that? Apparently you can blog with it as well. For the unorganized, it's another tool in your arsenal to bring chaos into order. For those more than slightly anal, like myself, it's a neurotic list maker's cyber dream come true! Let me know if you've tried Jott or would find this useful!

Okay, we're into March and I've actually kept my blogging resolutions so far this year. Lots of posts today as it's a day off from the regular routine and I've decided instead of accomplishing anything I need to do, I'd goof off on the web today. (Okay, so I've done 3 loads of laundry, it's not all play.) It's my way of relaxing.

I finally upgraded to Firefox 2.0 (don't tell me you are still using IE puh-leeze...) and added a bunch of new and pretty amazing extensions that should continue to facilitate my blogging efforts both here and on LiveJournal and in all my nerdy "webby-ness" in general. If you haven't migrated to FF 2.0, you should. The interface is cleaner and you can go to the site and take a peak at the other new features. No need to reinvent the wheel.

Right now I use deI.icio.us, Furl and Diggo, but Clipmarks seems to have real promise and some additional features the other three tools don't have, especially the ability to save and post clips or snips of anything including media and immediately post it to your blog of choice. There are several other new extensions, readily available via the links below or through the Firefox extensions site, which will help anyone who blogs, so here's the short list:

I chose it because it suited many of my needs, including all wheel drive for North East winters, room for 6 adults or 7 passengers (and it isn't thank god, a minivan), something that didn't guzzle gas, lots of safety features, didn't look or ride too much like a truck and finally, had the feel of being inside a luxury car.

One of the features that came standard with the car was a free 3 month subscription to XM Satellite radio. I must say, I am thoroughly enjoying it. So much so that I've already extended my subscription after only having the car a week and a half. That allows me online access to the music as well, though I still primarily listen to my own online iTunes station when I'm home, but it's nice for a change. I'd say it's programming is really geared for the 18 - 45 year old demographic with a few stations for "everyone else", but no matter how young or old, there is something for everyone.

My music taste really runs the gammut, and except for country music and hard core hip-hop, I can listen to most anything else, although of course, I have my favorites. Even though my car has an arsenal of CD's and a fully loaded 30GB iPod, I'm enjoying branching out from my typical listening fare. They do have a pretty good classic alternative station (but not as good as Gen80s, so "Don't even think abboud it!") and I do have that dialed in often. Right now I'm on a kick listening to a station that plays hits [not bubblegum] from around the world, but primarily the UK. I also must be hitting midlife crisis, as out of nowhere I've taken a shine to a station that reminds me of my old club days called BPM (Beats Per Minute), which plays amazing club dance tracks a la NYC, Miami, SF and Ibiza. I have a 10 speaker Bose system in said "ride" with a subwoofer, and I have my own virtual front seat dance party. Best of all, like my own station, I don't have to contend with any commercials and get crystal clear reception.

Definitely a nice variety of genre's, specialty stations from talk to comedy, along with real time weather and traffic for most major cities. There are several other choices for dance, ambient, dub, downtempo, chillout, and trip hop. Of course I like the pure moods station, classical, the 1940s station (big band/swing), and a few of the alternative rock and indy style stations have found there way on my presets. Too bad they don't have KCRW. I can get it online, but still not in the car. Guess I may have to resort to rippin' those streams and downloading that onto the iPod, but for now there is plenty to keep my overactive mind somewhat sated.

If you live in the NYC metro area and see some blonde biddy driving a white Acadia (there's not that many on the road right now - limited distribution) with the music cranked, and rocking out in the drivers seat, good chance that might be "yours truly". I refuse to grow up and won't make excuses. So if you're not too embarrassed, honk and wave, but I still might not hear ya over that XM Satellite. Sweeeeet!
